The book discussed how there are various discussions regarding death and the afterlife in Early Christianity. Some believe that when a person dies, he enters a state of “sleep,” wherein his soul does not gain any experience or whatsoever until he is once again “woken” for the final judgment before the resurrection. Some teach that the soul departs from the body after death and enters an intermediary state wherein it is “cleansed” of sins in preparation for the resurrection. Some also believe that the dead are immediately sent either to heaven and enter God’s kingdom or to hell and face eternal damnation.
